Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is again threatening the right of veto to force a substantive debate on the European Union’s policy towards Ukraine, writes DPA on Wednesday.
Until a consensus is reached on this policy, no decisions can be made at the level of EU leaders regarding additional financial support, security guarantees or the EU enlargement process, Viktor Orbán wrote in a letter addressed to the President of the European Council. Charles Michel, as reported by the DPA agency, is quoted by Agerpres.
The letter, which was seen by the German press agency, was also distributed in the EU countries in Brussels.
Also, an agreement on new sanctions against Russia is impossible until a consensus is reached, the Hungarian Prime Minister added.
Orban’s letter is causing a stir in Brussels, as the vast majority of EU countries want to make far-reaching decisions in favor of Ukraine at the summit on December 14 and 15.
Among them is the decision to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU and additional financial support of billions of euros until the end of 2027, but the decision must be unanimous.
Orbán questions whether the EU’s latest statement on Ukraine, adopted in October and based on the assumption that the EU strategy is working, actually reflects the current situation. He wonders if the sights need to be adjusted.
Some diplomats on Wednesday acknowledged that Viktor Orbán’s questions were important and justified, but questioned whether the Hungarian leader, who recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, was being influenced by Russia.
In addition, Viktor Orbán’s goal is to unlock more than 13 billion euros of frozen EU funds for his country. About a year ago, the European Commission said it would unblock the funds only after Orbán’s right-wing nationalist government fully followed through on promises to respect the rule of law. Orbán believes that Hungary has fulfilled these conditions.
