South Korea will suspend part Inter-Korean Agreement of 2018aimed at reducing tensions after North Korea said it had launched its first reconnaissance satellite, Yonhap reported on Tuesday, citing South Korea’s National Security Council, Reuters reported.
The move will resume intelligence and surveillance against North Korea in the Military Demarcation Line area, Yonhap reported.
North Korea said it had successfully put its first spy satellite into orbit on Tuesday and vowed to launch more soon, despite international condemnation from the United States and its allies.
Officials in South Korea and Japan, which first reported the launch, said they could not immediately verify whether the satellite had been put into orbit.
North Korea has told Japan it plans to launch a satellite between Wednesday and December 1, after two failed attempts to launch so-called spy satellites earlier this year.
Citing North Korea’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration, state news agency KCNA said the Malligyong-1 satellite was launched on a Chollima-1 rocket from the Sohae Satellite Launch Facility at 10:42 p.m. (13:42 GMT) and entered orbit at 22:54 (13:54 GMT).
Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said the military is still assessing whether the launch was successful or not.
The launch was condemned by Tokyo and Washington.
“Even if they call it a satellite, launching an object using ballistic missile technology is a clear violation of UN resolutions,” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida previously warned. He condemned the operation “with the greatest determination”, according to AFP, writes Agerpres.
This launch is a “gross violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions, heightens tensions and risks further destabilizing the region,” the spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council responded in a statement.
