US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Thursday asked Israel to take “urgent” measures to end settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, AFP and Agerpres reported.

Blinken, who is in San Francisco for the Asia-Pacific Summit, made the announcement during a telephone conversation with Benny Gantz, the Israeli opposition leader who joined Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military cabinet.

The US representative “stressed the urgent need to take concrete steps to defuse tensions in the West Bank, in particular by addressing the issue of increased violence by extremist settlers,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

The two officials also discussed diplomatic efforts to free the Hamas hostages.

About 240 people were kidnapped in the October 7 attacks by Hamas, which killed at least 1,200 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli authorities.
