Starlet of the 70s and 80s, Renault 5, with its reduced dimensions, five real seats, transverse engine arrangement and hatchback trunk was a modern model, if not revolutionary for its time. This distant ancestor of the Clio is preparing to return, and in an electric version, namely in parallel with the hybrid and thermal Clio. The project is not new. this was announced in 2021 during the presentation of Luca de Meo’s Renaulution plan, the new boss of the group, who made the electrification of brands (Renault, Alpine, Dacia) his priority. But what do we already know about it?
Return of Renault 5 from the seventies!
Its design is already becoming clearer! The concept of 2021 foreshadowed a modern reinterpretation very faithful to the original model, in particular its silhouette, face and headlight design. A few months ago (and in order to continue active communication on this matter) Renault presented new images that left no doubt about this inspiration (photo at the top of the article). A few days ago, this time more subtly, we learned more about its following colors: green, orange and blue (among other things), for a great seventies look! As for the mechanical side, the biggest mystery remains here: we expect it to get two units, 125 and 150 horsepower, and a 52 kWh battery for a range of about 420 kilometers. But none of this has been confirmed yet.
At what price?
Another question mark: its price! As early as 2021 Renault cheated us with a call tariff that would be between 20,000 and 25,000 euros, a future hit for the B-segment model! But this summer, the boss of the brand, Fabrice Kambolive, in an interview with a German magazine: expected 30,000 euros more, not 20,000. Quite a difference, while Citroën presented its electric ë-C3 at the beginning of the academic year with 350 kilometers of autonomy, available from 23,000 euros.
Finally, fortunately, Renault has just confirmed what we expected: the R5 E-Tech should start at around €25,000 before bonuses! A more reasonable price and already much better adapted to market expectations. Assembled in Douai in the north, we now also know that it will be presented in autumn 2024, in April of course. In the meantime, who knows what additional ballast Renault will release…
