Americans who want to vote for Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 election say they are more motivated to prevent Donald Trump from returning to the Oval Office than to support the incumbent for another term, a new Reuters/Plaster poll shows.

According to the two-day poll that ended Tuesday, the race between Biden and Trump is very tight, with Republican Trump leading Biden in American favorability 51% to 49% when respondents were asked to choose between the two. The poll has a confidence interval of about four percentage points, Reuters said.

Biden supporters were more likely than Trump supporters to say they would vote only to prevent another candidate from winning, a possible indicator of low enthusiasm for Biden as well as a deep disdain for Trump among many Democrats.

About 50% of Biden supporters in the poll said they would vote “against Trump and his policies,” compared to 38% who said they would vote “for Biden and his policies.” At the same time, 12% of Biden’s supporters said they were not sure which reason would be the basis of their vote.

Among Trump supporters, 40% said they would vote against Biden, while 42% said they would vote for Trump to support the Republican nominee and his policies, with 18% saying they were not sure why.

Trump is the front-runner for the Republican nomination to challenge Biden in 2024, although neither has been officially nominated by his party.

Low enthusiasm among Democratic voters for Biden

Many Americans are still unfamiliar with Biden’s economic policies, which led Congress to approve significant new investments in US infrastructure.

Democratic strategists said the poll results reinforce the view that Biden needs to make a case for re-election, especially in highly competitive states such as Georgia and North Carolina.

“Biden 100 percent needs to articulate his economic vision,” said Michael Cerazo, a Democratic strategist who worked on former President Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns. “I don’t think he can win Georgia this election cycle on anti-Trump messaging alone.”

Many Americans, Reuters notes, are fed up with both Biden and Trump. A new poll shows strong support for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the scion of a famous political family and a well-known anti-vaccination campaigner. In a hypothetical race between the three, 30% of respondents chose Biden, 32% Trump and 20% Kennedy.
