We told you about it last August Ferrari 250 GTO, one of 34 produced and potentially one of the most exceptional. During the first years of life, this car experienced a glorious period: it was equipped with a 4.0L engine instead of the usual 3.0L engine ! It is enough to transfer it from 250 GT to 330 LM in Ferrari (for Le Mans, of course). This Ferrari was the only model in its series that was officially raced by the official Ferrari team. The car was subsequently returned to the factory where it was refitted with a 3.0-litre engine, reverting to its original classification as 250 GTO.
A rarity at auction today
With such a pedigree and unique history, RM Sotheby’s, the auction house chosen to auction this little gem, has valued this car at approx. 60 million dollars. Unfortunately, the final price was lower… The sale took place on November 13th, and in a rare event, the only item up for sale that day was this Ferrari! It all happened very quickly and she found a buyer in literally a few minutes… So, the verdict? The sale was concluded on a very nice sum of $47 million, or 51.7 million, if you take into account all costs! We’re quite a ways away from the $60 million that RM Sotheby’s wanted… But before we get frustrated, we have to highlight these few numbers…
Disappointing price, but…
The $51.7 million it sold for makes it the second highest official auction car ever sold. Record holder Fr 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupé” sold for $146 million at auction in 2022 ! Note that the current Ferrari owner, who decided to get rid of it this year, originally purchased it in 1985 for $500,000 at the time, or about $1.4 million today when adjusted for inflation. Whatever happens, he has therefore made a more than profitable investment, which at the end of this sale should protect him financially for many years to come…
