Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced on Tuesday that the French capital will hold a popular “vote” on February 4. the possibility of introducing increased tariffs for parking SUVs and SUVs.
In a video broadcast on social networks, the socialist mayor invited Parisians to vote for a “very significant increase” non-residential parking rates for these vehicles, which are increasingly present on the roads.
Paris follows the Lyon model
The purpose of this higher price offer is as an incentive “better shared use of public space for the benefit of gentle ways of movement, schools and pedestrians”it is stated in the press release of the Paris City Hall.
Ann Hidalgo therefore wants to follow the example of Grégory Doucet, the environmentalist mayor of Lyon, where from 2024 pricing will be introduced to penalize heavier vehicles that pollute the environment.
More or fewer SUVs in Paris?
Here is the question I ask you for this second citizen vote.

The vote, which will be open to all registered Parisians, is the second popular “vote” organized by the city, after last April, which led to the ban on self-driving scooters. Despite a relatively low turnout of 7.46% of registered voters, 89% of voters voted against the devices.
Which models will this really affect?
The City Hall of Paris notes that although the role of individual cars has decreased over the last decade thanks to proactive policies, the size and average weight of vehicles continues to increase.
With this “vote,” Ann Hidalgo intends to curb this trend by saying “stop” to car manufacturers who encourage the purchase of increasingly imposing, expensive cars that consume raw materials and pollute the environment.
Although the exact amount of the specific price is not disclosed, the mayor noted a “very significant increase”. the same the defining weight that an SUV must reach to be considered “heavy” is not specified. We also don’t know if this will only affect thermal models or if it will also include hybrids and electrics.
