Romania is preparing for games against Israel and Switzerland, which could return the tricolors to the final tournament of the European Championship after an eight-year break.
Nicolae Stanciu and Romania’s dream to qualify for Euro 2024
After eight games played in Group I of the previous tournament, Romania is unbeaten at the top with four wins and four draws.
Before the last two games, captain Nicolae Stanchiu spoke about the qualification and strengths of the tricolors.
“Qualifying would mean everything to me, it’s my biggest dream to take Romania to the EUROs, considering it’s been 8 years since the last tournament I was at. To be on the field in the qualifiers, to be the captain is more than I could have imagined.
We still have those two games and we all know what that means, what we can achieve. I think from the very beginning of the campaign we showed that we are ready, we know what we want, and we will be like that in the match against Israel.
We want to please the fans at the end of the match against Switzerland. I know all the tickets are sold out, it would be great to celebrate qualifying with 50,000 people in the stands.
We know how much we have worked to get here, I wish with all my heart that we can remain unbeaten even after these two matches. The group is complex, the results are quite surprising. I just want us to qualify, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter if we lose or not. The ultimate goal, what we all strive for, is to get to Europe next year.
We are all friends, you don’t see groups of 5-6 people like before, although it was normal back then. It was a group from Steaua, there were 4-5 from Dynamo or other teams. Now we have a perfect relationship, and it shows on the field. We are very good with each other.
What Mister did is important, I mean there wasn’t much change in this campaign. It was based on one rod, and it helped us, the relationship between us strengthened, and I can say that we are a family in the truest sense of the word.
I think we deserve to qualify. This is the only criterion. If we don’t deserve it, we won’t get there, but I think we deserve it and we proved that during the campaign.
I am most pleased with the group formed here, the relationship between the players, and I wish that, regardless of whether new players come, this state will be preserved, because that is the only way we will be able to get results, constantly reach the final tournaments.” – claimed Stanchu for FRF TV, according to VSP.
