The Czech Republic was a heavy favorite to win the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly the FedCup), but Canada won the semi-final match and will compete for the trophy with Italy.

Italy reached the final of the Billie Jean King Cup

In the first semi-final in Seville, Italy passed Slovenia without emotion with a score of 2:0.

Martina Trevisan (43 WTA) defeated Kaya Juvan (104 WTA) in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-3, and Jasmine Paolini (30 WTA) won her match against Tamara Zidansek (100 WTA), 6-2 , 4-6, 6-3.

Canada defeated the Czech Republic in the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup

In the second semi-final, Canada unexpectedly defeated the Czech Republic (11-time winners of the competition) with a score of 2:1.

The European women clearly won the first game through Barbora Krejcikova (10 WTA): 6-2, 6-1 against Maryna Stakusic (258 WTA).

Leila Fernandez (WTA 35 / US Open 2021 finalist) restored parity by defeating Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 7 / Wimbledon 2023 champion), 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Barbora Krejcikova and Kateryna Siniakova were favorites in the doubles match, but suffered a dramatic loss to Gabriela Dabrowski and Leila Fernandez, 7-5, 7-6(3).

The final between Italy and Canada kicks off at 4pm on Sunday.

Italy has won the competition four times (2006, 2009, 2010 and 2013), while Canada’s best performance was reaching the semi-finals (1988).
