The first competition took place in Tokyo in 1970 and was won by the American Stan Smith (beating Rod Laver). The competition covered the whole world, with Tokyo followed by Paris, Barcelona, Boston, Melbourne, Stockholm, Houston, New York, Frankfurt, Hanover, Lisbon, Sydney, Shanghai, London and Turin.
Playing surface
Subsequently, the Champions Tour was held on “Carpet”, in 1974 – on grass (Kooyong Stadium in Melbourne), “Outdoor Hard” in Houston (in 2003 and 2004) and “Indoor Hard” (in London – O2 Arena and Turin – Pala Alpitour).

Money in Tournament of Champions 2023
The 54th edition of Tour of Champions history could make the big winner $4,801,500 richer.
There is only one condition: to win all matches in the group before lifting the trophy.
This year, the Italian organizers will offer record prizes, and if there is a tournament winner who wins all the games (three each in the group, the semi-finals and the final for a total of five games), he will go home with a check for $4,801,500.
The reserve player of the competition will receive $152,500 even if he does not play at all in Turin.
A player who plays all the group stage matches but does not triumph in any of them will not go home empty-handed: $325,500.
