The podcast momentum seems to have died down in recent years, but the demand is still there and the content available is rich, varied and often very interesting. However, if you’re new to the format, you’ll quickly find that any podcast app offers an endless number of options, making each choice difficult and overwhelming.
But if you want to listen to something that will bring new information to your ears, that can put what is happening around you in a better context, we have chosen a starting point: below you will find five recommendations of podcasts in fields such as philosophy, history, politics or science.
What you should know
Stuff You Should Know is one of the oldest podcasts that still has regular episodes. It was created in 2008 by hosts Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant. It has since amassed over 1,500 episodes.
Before each episode, they painstakingly document in order to then dissect various topics in an accessible way, from history, science, pop culture, or even everyday life. You can expect a conversation between two friends, casual and full of jokes, but also with relevant information presented in an easy-to-digest way.
Philosophize about it!
If you’ve wanted to delve into the world of philosophy for a long time, but it seems too complicated, Philosophize This is a great place to start your research. Beginners would ideally take the episodes in order, as host Steven West does something like “Philosophy 101” at the beginning where he explains classic concepts and the most famous philosophers and schools of thought to create a base from which the listener starts. After that, things also move to topics more relevant to the present, such as the rise of narcissism in society.
Save the World Bridge
Pod Save the World is a weekly international political podcast hosted by Tommy Vitor and Ben Rhodes, two of Barack Obama’s former national security advisers. They promise “nonsensical talk about foreign policy” and that’s exactly what they deliver: they summarize the week’s most important events and comment on them, not shying away from giving their honest opinion.
