The Animal Supervision and Protection Authority (ASPA) of Bucharest announced on Thursday evening that almost half of the dogs caught within the radius of the municipality of Bucharest come from sectors 5 and 6 in the first ten months of the year. 6,509 dogs were caught in the sector alone, that is, more than 25% of the total number, writes News.ro.
“Almost half of the dogs captured within the radius of the Bucharest municipality come from sectors 5 and 6. Between January 1 and October 31, 2023, ASPA crews captured 509 dogs from sector 6, representing 25.6% of the total number of dogs captured and transported to ASPA shelters,” ASPA said Thursday evening.
The institution clarifies that the areas in sector 6 where they are most often seized are: Lacul Morii, ANL Brâncuşi district, Valea Largă Road, Osiei Road, Ciorogârla Road, Str. Preciziei, str. Valea Călămătuiului, st. Valea Cascadelor, Timisoara Boulevard and Ghencea Extension.
During the same period, crews recovered 428 dogs from Sector 5, accounting for 21.53% of the total number of dogs seized, according to ASPA. Most of them came from the following areas: Cooperativei Road (Ghencea War Cemetery Area 3), Funigeilor Road, Ghindari Road, Dedeman Ghencea Shop Area, Road. Sălaj (Tirglu Pučeni district), road. Vîrtejului, the road. Bucharest-Măgurele, Ghidigeni str., Zăbrăuţului str., Lacul Pasărea str., Şinei St., Tiparniţei str., ND Cocea str., Căruţei str.
“These figures show us that these territories are problematic and capture is not enough,” the agency’s representatives say.
ASPA says that in these areas, local police should step in more often to identify and enforce sanctions against those who own dogs and do not spay or microchip them.
“At the same time, it is necessary that local police sectors in these areas conduct measures to identify and, if necessary, prosecute owners who have unsterilized and unmicrochipped dogs. People who do not have proper fencing should also be checked, and dogs can move freely between private and public places,” the quoted source added.
According to experts, another solution to prevent the abandonment of dogs is the installation of video surveillance cameras in the places where they are caught the most.
