Ukraine on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for a parliamentarian accused of embezzling more than 2.4 million euros from the national railway company, AFP reports.

“The higher anti-corruption court partially satisfied the request of the prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Bureau and announced an international investigation against the People’s Deputy of Ukraine,” ABB said in a statement.

According to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the people’s deputy is accused of embezzling 93.27 million hryvnias (about 2.4 million euros) from the National Railway of Ukraine from 2015 to 2017.

“The investigation showed that in the period from December 2015 to March 2017, the deputy organized the purchase of equipment for the needs of Ukrzaliznytsia at inflated prices and with the participation of two companies, one of which was under his control,” ABB reported. the statement says.

Neither the court nor the Anti-Corruption Bureau has disclosed the name of the deputy, but according to Ukrainian media, it is Yaroslav Dubnevich, who for many years was a member of several parties, including ex-president Petro Poroshenko at the time of the events.

The current location of the Dubnevichs is unknown.

Fighting corruption, an endemic evil in a country facing a Russian invasion, is one of the criteria set by the EU to consider the candidacy of Ukraine, which has received tens of billions of euros in Western aid since the war began.
