Eddie Jones steps down as Australia coach after 2023 Rugby World Cup disaster

Jones was appointed coach of Australia in January this year. He replaced New Zealand’s Dave Rennie and was seen as the savior and the man who could spring a surprise to bring Australia a third World Cup title.

Australia have lost seven of their nine matches under Eddie Jones and their ignominious exit from the 2023 World Cup group stage was the reason. He signed a 5-year contract, but resigned after only ten months.

In an interview with The Australian, Jones said that he had agreed to the terms of his departure and that there would be no payment.

“I am disappointed that what we wanted to do in terms of changing the system has not been achieved in the short term.

I have a strong sense of disappointment. But I don’t hold grudges against anyone. I really enjoyed coaching the players. The players were fantastic. They just need better conditions for training and playing” – Eddie Jonescoach of Australia.

Eddie Jones also coached the Wallabies from 2001-2005, leading the Australians to the 2003 World Cup final (lost to England).

South Africa won their fourth ever World Cup after defeating New Zealand 12-11 in the final at the Stade de France.
