“In the 50m freestyle final on Friday night, he finished incorrectly and took an elbow. It’s the safest sport, but it still happens. The medical team immediately intervened and the decision was made to stop him.

We don’t take any chances. National competitions – in two weeks, Europeans – in six weeks. David trained this morning, he’ll do it in the afternoon, but it’s better to protect him,” said his coach, Adrian Radulescu.

David Popovici won the 200m freestyle on day one and finished 5th in the 50m freestyle (21.84 seconds).
