The move came after the UN secretary-general called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, accusing both sides of killing and injuring civilians in violation of international humanitarian law.

Guterres said the grievances of the Palestinian people could not justify the “horrific and unprecedented acts of terrorism on October 7” by Hamas in Israel and called for the immediate release of all hostages.

But he also emphasized that “these terrible attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”

“I am deeply concerned about the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are seeing in Gaza. Let’s be clear: no side of the armed conflict is above international humanitarian law. (…) It is also important to recognize that the attacks by Hamas did not happen out of the blue. The Palestinian people have been subjected to a suffocating occupation for 56 years. But the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the horrific attacks of Hamas. And these terrible attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people,” Guterres said, according to Reuters.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, called Guterres’ speech “shocking.”

“Mr. Secretary General, what world do you live in? Without a doubt, she is not ours,” he wrote on Twitter, calling for her to resign.

“The Secretary-General’s shocking speech at the Security Council meeting, amid rocket fire all over Israel, clearly proved beyond any doubt that the Secretary-General is completely disconnected from the reality in our region and that he sees the carnage committed by Nazi terrorists in a distorted light. and an immoral way. His statement that “the Hamas attack did not happen out of the blue” shows an understanding of terrorism and murder. It is inexplicable and truly sad that the head of an organization that emerged after the Holocaust would hold such horrific views,” he added in a post on Twitter.

And French President Emmanuel Macron said in Ramallah on Tuesday that the Hamas attack on Israel is “also a disaster for the Palestinians” and that “nothing can justify the suffering” of civilians in Gaza, reports AFP.

“The life of a Palestinian is worth as much as the life of a Frenchman, which is worth as much as the life of an Israeli,” Macron said alongside Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who asked him to act to end Israel’s “aggression” in Gaza, on 10 18 day of war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.
