Speaking at the Hudson Institute in Washington, von der Leyen also said that dialogue between Israel and its neighbors must continue.

“I have seen the Arab streets fill with anger throughout the region. So the risk of regional spread is real,” she said.

Israel is waging war against Hamas in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza after the militants killed more than 1,400 people in a surprise attack on Israel on October 7.

According to Palestinian health officials, the toll from Israeli strikes on Gaza has risen to more than 3,500 dead and more than 12,000 wounded.

Israel also faces Hezbollah on its border with Lebanon.

“Iran, the patron of Hamas, only wants to fan the flames of chaos. Russia, Iran’s military client, is watching closely. Russia and Hamas are the same,” said the EU leader.
