Gaza media reported Thursday that Jamila al-Shanti, the widow of Hamas co-founder Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, the group’s first and only woman elected to political office, was killed in a dawn Israeli airstrike.

Palestinian media did not provide details on Jamila al-Shanti’s whereabouts at the time of the attack.

In 2021, Jamila Al-Shanti became the first woman elected to a political position in Hamas, the group’s highest governing body.

Her husband was killed in 2004 in an Israeli airstrike during the Second Intifada.
