Jordanian police said on Wednesday that several officers were injured during clashes that broke out with protesters outside the Israeli embassy who were burning property, Reuters reported.
Earlier, the authorities brought in the police to disperse thousands of demonstrators who planned to march to the heavily fortified Israeli embassy to protest Israel’s military offensive on Gaza.
The Israeli embassy, where protesters gather daily, has long been a flashpoint for anti-Israel protests during periods of unrest in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Dozens of youths tried to storm the heavily guarded compound late Tuesday night, but security forces fired tear gas to disperse them. Several protesters were arrested.
Anti-Israel demonstrations have also spread across the country, with some criticizing the authorities’ inaction, saying their fellow Gazans are left alone with Israel’s military might.
The peace treaty between Jordan and Israel is deeply unpopular among many citizens who see normalization as a betrayal of the rights of their fellow Palestinians.
Amman, which lost the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, to Israel in the 1967 war, fears that expanding violence in the region could have consequences for Jordan’s large percentage of the population, which is made up of Palestinians.
According to Reuters, authorities have deployed heavy security measures near the border to prevent activists from organizing protests.
