Maccabi Haifa have requested the postponement of their match against Villarreal in the Europa League
Villarreal was supposed to host Maccabi Haifa on October 26 as part of the third group stage of the Europa League.
In a letter sent by the club’s general manager, Itsik Ovadia, Maccabi Haifa is asking to postpone this match to next month.
The club explained that “at a time when the entire country is in mourning and mobilizing to defend the state of Israel from its enemies, it is clear to everyone that sports are taking a back seat.”
Maccabi Haifa said: “These are difficult days for the citizens of Israel and it is almost impossible to focus on football while we mourn the dead and our best sons are on the front lines.”
“We expect attention from the European football community and this is the least UEFA can do for us in these difficult times.
Our clubs represent a whole community that is suffering a lot,” added the Israeli champion.
According to the Europa League group stage schedule, the second match between Maccabi Haifa and Villarreal will take place at the Israeli team’s field on November 11, Agerpres reports.
