On Sunday, October 15, at 21:45 at the National Arena in Bucharest, the match between Romania and Andorra in Group I of the qualifying tournament for the European Championship in Germany will be counted and will be broadcast live on Prima TV.
Romania need to complete the simple formality of a draw with Andorra to stay in contention for qualification for the 2024 finals, any other result would be tantamount to a massive disaster for the tricolors.
In Group I, Switzerland has 14 points from six matches, followed by Romania with 13 points from seven matches and Israel with 11 points from six matches. Three teams will compete for two places that guarantee their presence at Euro 2024. , while Kosovo with seven points, Belarus with five points and Andorra with two points (from seven matches) are excluded from the qualification calculations.
Romania missed a huge chance to climb to No. 1 in Group I and put pressure on Israel and Switzerland (whose head-to-head match was postponed to November 15) by drawing 0-0 in Belarus.
However, Edi Jordenescu’s side remain unbeaten in their current preliminary matches with three wins and four draws and are the best defensive team in the group, conceding just four goals in seven matches.
“These are difficult matches, these are not previously won matches. The main thing is to get up, as we did before. Qualification consists of several steps. We have to beat Andorra. I can’t allow myself to talk about what will happen in a month, the main thing is to beat Andorra,” Edi Yordenescu said.
Andorra leaves after losing 0-3 at home against Kosovo, with whom it drew 1-1 (second draw in the group, after a 0-0 home match against Belarus).
Koldo Alvarez’s side remained bottom of the table, the only one in Group I without a win, having the weakest attack with just three goals scored and the weakest defense with 13 goals conceded in seven matches.
The only advantage for the Andorrans is that the game in Bucharest will be closed to spectators due to incidents caused by Romanian fans in the last home match against Kosovo, but the tricolors will be supported by an estimated 20,000 under-14s.
The two teams have met each other five times so far, with Romania winning each time against Andorra (17-1 aggregate goal difference), most recently in the current previous match on March 25, 2023 at the Estadio Nacional in La Vella with 2 goals scored -0 after the goals of Dennis Man (34) and Denis Alibek (49).
