Generally, when two products compete with each other, manufacturers align on price with the opposite model, and vice versa. The previous generation Mercedes-AMG GT cost about the same as a Porsche 911, and depending on the version was even cheaper.
But the new generation GT literally crushed the original price of the previous one. While the first AMG GT commanded around €130,000 for its 467-horsepower V8, the new billed from 199,750 eurosand that’s without taking into account the €60,000 environmental fine next year in France, as well as the weight penalty, as the car weighs around two tonnes.
More powerful and better equipped Mercedes-AMG GT
So, of course, it’s not the car it was in 2015, because basically this model is evolving 585 hp through its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the same output as the previous Mercedes-AMG GT R.
It also gets two-wheel drive at the same time to become all-wheel drive, but €60,000 more than the asking price compared to the Porsche 911 Carrera S, undoubtedly 450 hp. and rear-wheel drive, however, can seem quite indigestible.
Who are his competitors?
Mercedes-AMG seems to want to target the 911 Turbo and its 580 hp, in which case the GT costs €20,000 less. Note that the GT is very well equipped as standard, even if you have to reach into your wallet to add some aesthetically pleasing bits like exposed carbon or new wheels.
At this price level, even if it may seem very expensive for Mercedes, the GT is now also competing with the GT 2+2 and against the Porsche 911 Turbo mentioned above, or even the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo (from €225,000) and the new Aston Martin DB12 ( also from 225,000 euros), the German is almost 10% cheaper.
