Some rumors have been hinting at this for a while, now it’s official: General Motors is preparing to return to Europe. Six years after the sale of Opel to the PSA group (now Stellantis thanks to the merger with FCA), General Motors returns to European soil with its “own” products.

The Detroit giant will set its wheels in Europe through its high-end Cadillac brand and the Lyriq model, a large SUV with a length of 4.99 meters and, incidentally, the first 100% electric model of the manufacturer. The American SUV will begin its European adventure in Switzerland, where it will be sold at a base price of 82,000 Swiss francs. or about 85,000 euros.

What is the Cadillac Lyriq?

Introduced in 2020, Cadillac Lyriq became the ambassador of many novelties of the premium brand General Motors. In short, the Lyriq is a new aesthetic signature for Cadillac, with a completely redesigned front end, especially clean lines, an impressive interior, especially thanks to the huge 33-inch screen, and of course the arrival of a new electric motor. .

The Lyriq will be available with rear- or all-wheel drive, including a massive 100kWh battery for claimed autonomy of 500 km and a maximum charging power of 150 kW. Those numbers aren’t enough to shake up certain electric models that are already well-established here, but General Motors is nonetheless looking to “reimagining American luxury in the coming years”making the Lyriq a spiritual successor to the very refined Cadillac Escalade.

Soon in France

After the Lyriq, General Motors will offer other electric models in Europe while expanding to other countries, starting with France and Sweden, opening “flagship” dealerships in various European cities. The first will be located in Switzerland, in Zurich.

The commercial strategy of the brand in Europe will be similar to that of Tesla, with the possibility of ordering a car without visiting a dealership and directly through the manufacturer’s website.
