Having started from third place, the Red Bull driver finished the sprint race in second place, needing three points more than team-mate Sergio Perez to triumph again this year.
Oscar Piastri (McLaren) set the best sprint time at Losail (35:01.297), starting from pole position, with his teammate Lando Norris rounding out the podium.
Second-placed Sergio Perez (RedBull) was forced to retire on lap ten after colliding with Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Ocon.
