Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives began running for speaker of the House on Wednesday, a day after a small group of hardliners managed to oust Kevin McCarthy from office for the first time in history.

Reuters lists some possible candidates:

Jim Jordan, a close associate of Trump, has a good chance

Jim Jordan, an ally of former President Donald Trump, was nominated by some Republican insurgents for speaker during the January election. He received 20 votes during the voting round. He also previously challenged McCarthy in the 2018 leadership race.

Jordan, who represents Ohio, is the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, one of three committees at the center of the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Jordan, who is considered highly impulsive, has publicly clashed with Democrats over their investigations into then-President Trump.

He confirmed to reporters on Wednesday that he is in the race. In a letter to colleagues, he called for unity: “We can focus on changes that improve the country and come together to achieve real solutions.”

Steve Scalise, who is considered McCarthy’s successor

Steve Scalise is the #1 Republican. 2 of the House of Representatives, who has long been considered McCarthy’s heir apparent.

The Louisiana lawmaker may face questions from the caucus about his health since he announced in August that he is being treated for multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

In 2017, Scalise was seriously injured in a shootout while practicing at a charity baseball game.

Matt Goetz, the lawmaker who led the campaign to remove McCarthy, said he would support Scalise for the job.

Politico reported, citing sources, that Scalise has already urged his fellow Republicans to lobby for the post, but has yet to formally announce his candidacy.

Kevin Hearn

Kevin Hern is the chairman of the Republican Caucus, a group of conservative Republicans. He told reporters that several lawmakers had approached him about running and suggested he was open to the idea. However, the Oklahoma lawmaker may have trouble attracting support from moderates.

Patrick McHenry, close to McCarthy

Representative Patrick McHenry was named interim speaker after McCarthy’s ouster.

McHenry, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, is an ally of McCarthy who spoke out in support of him before the impeachment vote.

McHenry, a North Carolina state lawmaker, has said he does not want the job, but supporters could push him for it if other candidates lose support.

Tom Emmer

The Minnesota lawmaker led the House Republican campaign in the 2022 midterm elections, when Republicans wrested the House majority from Biden’s Democrats.

He endorsed Scalise for the job, but several lawmakers have said they may consider him as a candidate for the post.

Tom Cole

Tom Cole is a veteran Republican who holds the important position of chairman of the House Rules Committee. While he has not said he would be interested in the post, the Oklahoma lawmaker could draw support from Republicans seeking a hard-right alternative.
