Russia is “actively and constantly” jamming GPS communications, which creates the risk of collisions between ships in Romanian territorial waters or those entering areas on which navigation is imposed by Moscow, and Romania and Europe should prepare for “confrontation in the long term with regime of the Russian Federation,” said the Chief of Staff of the Romanian Army, General Daniel Petrescu.
The head of the Romanian army made these statements on Wednesday at the Euro-Atlantic Stability Forum, saying that at the moment the end of the war started by Russia in Ukraine is not in sight, and Romania and Europe must prepare for a long period of confrontation with the regime of the Russian Federation.

- “We feel this confrontation very well, especially on NATO’s eastern flank and especially in the region where they come from, the Black Sea.
- The war of the Russian Federation in Ukraine fundamentally destabilized the Black Sea region and caused a feeling of insecurity among the coastal countries, which affected the security environment (…).
- The Black Sea has become the zone of military operations of Russia. From here, they launch missiles towards Ukraine, at its civilian or military infrastructure. The region has become the scene of increasingly frequent military operations, maritime incidents and actions that restrict the free movement of ships,” said General Daniel Petrescu, as quoted by Digi 24.
“Romanian infrastructure or commercial vessels in (Romanian) territorial waters may be accidentally hit”
He cited the example of Russia’s constant attack on Ukrainian ports located near the border with Romania, which also affect the inhabitants of the Danube Delta.
- “There is an ongoing risk of an increased likelihood of incidents on NATO’s border, caused by the possibility that certain drones or missiles may miss. Romanian infrastructure or commercial vessels in territorial waters (Romania) may be accidentally affected.
- Active and constant actions of Russian jamming affect the GPS communication, which creates a risk of collision between ships in the territorial waters of Romania or those entering the zones of navigation restrictions from the side of Russia,” said the head of the Romanian army.
He also talked about another danger – sea mines drifting in the Black Sea.
