On Wednesday evening, firefighters intervened at a children’s hospital in Timișoara after smoke was emitted in a technical room. Approximately 25 children were evacuated and taken to the main building. In September last year, a similar incident occurred in the same medical unit.

The Ministry of Health reported the following information:

  • “This evening, in the technical room of the children’s clinical emergency medical hospital “Louis Tsurkanu” in Timisoara, there was a smoke emission from the electrical equipment of the compressor.
  • 25 children, 20 family members and 14 doctors were safely evacuated.
  • Firefighters ventilated the premises, and after checking it was determined that there was no danger.
  • The children will return to the halls.”

The head of the hospital, Ovidiu Adam, clarified that it was not a fire or a flame, but the release of smoke “due to an oil leak from the medical compressor that overheated from the engine”, quoted by News.ro. He added that all the children will return to the hospital.

“I turned to the ISU because there was smoke in the basement of the building, in the technical room, due to an oil leak from the medical compressor, which overheated from the engine. But there was no fire or flame, only smoke from overheated oil. The situation is under control, all the children will return to the hospital in the next few minutes, there are no problems,” said Ovidiu Adam, manager of the “Louis Tsurkanu” children’s hospital.

“Everything is under control, there was an oil leak from the compressor room. The children were evacuated when they smelled the hot oil,” medical director Mihai Hafencu said on Antena 3. He stated that it was burning oil with a pungent smell, not smoke.

About 25 patients who were transferred to the main building are hospitalized in the pediatric surgery and orthopedic clinic.

According to ISU Timiş, firefighters intervened after smoke was seen in the technical room of a children’s hospital in Timisoara. As a result, about 25 children were evacuated and taken to the main building.

There were no casualties as a result of the incident.

The premises were ventilated.

About a year ago, on September 18, 2022, a fire broke out in the same hospital, dozens of children and their mothers were evacuated.

“The incident occurred in a technical room located on the 1st floor of the building of the bone marrow transplant department, and the probable cause of the fire, which led to significant smoke on the 1st and 2nd floors of the hospital, was a malfunction during the operation of an electrical air cleaning device” , – ISU representatives reported at the time.
