Justice Minister Alina Gorgiu claims that more than 2 million people have used drugs in Romania, and this number may be even higher.
The minister says that the European legal strategy does not consist in condemning the consumer, but in a more effective fight against human trafficking. In this regard, Gorgiou suggests that traffickers should no longer benefit from suspended sentences.
“We need a law similar to Anastasia’s, let’s call it May 2,” the minister said.
Justice Minister Alina Gorgiou recently argued that tougher penalties are not the solution to the drug trade, which is now in some cases worse than murder.
In the case of high-risk drug trafficking, the sentence is up to 20 years, and if the user dies, the sentence is up to 25 years.
“The problem is not punishment, but catching them (traffickers),” said Gorgiou.
According to the Minister of Justice, DIICOT has only 190 prosecutors with competence in this area, but they deal with all organized crime offences.
The Minister of Justice mentioned the same problems in a recent interview.
“In 2010, we talked about 6,000 drug-related cases, in 2015 – 8,700 cases, so this year we will have 20,000 cases in the first eight months alone. But they should be seen in context, as DIICOT, which has exclusive jurisdiction over drugs, has 190 prosecutors dealing with these organized crime matters. (…) If from tomorrow these 190 prosecutors no longer deal with any other crimes within DIICOT’s jurisdiction, but exclusively with these 20,000 files, there will still be 105 files per prosecutor. (…) Thus, we have to deal with the files on drug trafficking, big networks, as a priority,” said Alina Gorgiou last week.
