Kyiv said on Friday that Thursday’s attack by Russian drones on the region where a Ukrainian military airfield is located showed that Moscow was pursuing warplanes that took part in attacks on Russian-controlled Crimea this week, Reuters reported.

The Air Force of Ukraine said that Russia had launched 17 kamikaze-type drones in the center of Khmelnytskyi region, where the Starokostiantyn airbase is located, which was repeatedly attacked during the war. Kyiv said in a statement that it shot down all 17.

Drone wreckage damaged 12 houses and broke windows in a school, no one was injured, regional official Serhiy Tyurin said.

“The Khmelnytskyi region has been attacked. We understand what the enemy is looking for: the place where our commanders hid bombers after the recent events at sea near Crimea,” Air Force Colonel Yuriy Ignat said in a telecast.

Russia, which invaded Ukraine almost 19 months ago, did not immediately comment on Kyiv’s remarks.

Ukraine said it launched a missile strike at a shipyard in the Crimean port of Sevastopol early Wednesday and seriously damaged an amphibious assault boat and a submarine important to the Russian navy.

Kyiv did not say which missiles were used. Sky News reported that the operation involved Storm Shadows cruise missiles supplied by Great Britain, which were launched by Ukrainian military aircraft.
