Daniil Medvedev and Andriy Rublev had to contend (also) with very difficult conditions at Arthur Ashe in their US Open 2023 quarterfinal match (Daniil won, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, after two hours and 48 minutes). The heat and humidity were the real enemies and Medvedev prepared the day when at one point he sent a message to the organizers.

The intense heat and humidity took their toll on Daniil and Andrii’s physical condition, with the top two players exhausted at the end of their 2023 US Open quarter-final match.

During a match against his good friend, Daniil said: “The player will die and they will see”, a message sent to the American organizers.

Later, at a press conference, Medvedev spoke about how he felt and how difficult Arthur Ashe’s playing conditions were.

“I could go on and on about the brutal conditions for both of them. You see, there is no skin left on my nose, and here (points to the neck) it is red. It’s not because of the sun, but my skin has gone. I just saw Andrii (No. Rublev) in the locker room, and his face is also very red.

That says it all, as if we left everything on the field. And if the match had lasted longer, we would have gone even further…

But the question arises: how far can we go? That’s what’s dangerous. Maybe we could have gone five sets, or maybe what happened to Yibin Wu in Washington (not when he fainted and had to retire) would have happened.

I really don’t know what we can do. We probably can’t stop the tour for four days because that would ruin everything, with TVs and tickets sold. Could we go three games under these conditions? Some people will not be happy.

Maybe nothing will happen until the end of my career, and I’m talking in vain, but the point is that we don’t want something to happen, and then we say: “My God, Medvedev said this a few years ago. ..”

But I have no solution. I had an ice pack after the game. But everything was in a fog, as if I did not see. Because I no longer had adrenaline from the match. I was shaking a little.

I stayed in the locker room for 10-15 minutes, then took an ice bath. I have changed. I went to eat. But I had an attack of hypoglycemia.
