Storm Daniel has been wreaking havoc in western and central Greece since Monday. Hundreds of people are calling for help from emergency services just days after a forest fire in the north of the country was brought under control after more than two weeks.

“A man died after a wall collapsed near the town of Volos, probably due to bad weather,” a fire service official told Reuters, without giving further details.

According to the Athens News Agency, the wall collapsed when a man raising cattle tried to reach his animals.

About 94 people were moved to safety after torrential rain damaged part of the shelter they were staying in in Volos, another fire brigade official said.

Images broadcast by state television ERT showed cars in Volos, a port city on Pagaseti Bay, washed away by torrential rain.

A man is reported missing in Volos after his car was washed away by rain on Tuesday, fire service spokesman Ioannis Artopoios told Skai TV.

His son escaped, but his father was swept away, search operations are underway.

“This is the most extreme weather in terms of rainfall in 24 hours since records have been kept in the country,” said Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kykilias, urging people to stay indoors.

Authorities restricted traffic in Volos and the nearby mountainous region of Pelion, where the storm caused widespread power outages.

The cars ended up in the sea in Agios Ioannis, Pelion, Greek City Times reports.

Greece’s meteorological service said around 110 residents and tourists in the coastal village of Agios Ioannis in eastern Pelion were stranded as Storm Daniel swept through the region.

In 2017, floods in Greece killed 25 people and left hundreds homeless.
