A spectator was ejected from the Arthur Ashe Arena after Alexander Zverev said the man said “Hitler’s most famous line” during the German’s match against Italian Yannick Sinner (2023 US Open Round of 16).

Alexander Zverev intervenes after fan shouts “Deutschland über alles” at US Open 2023

The incident happened around 00:15 local time during the fourth set. Zverev paused before serving and caught the attention of James Keotavong, the head referee of the match.

“He just said Hitler’s most famous line. He said the most famous Hitler quote that exists in this world. This is unacceptable. It is incredibly” – Oleksandr Zverev.

The referee turned to the spectators sitting behind him and tried to find the fan to whom Zverev pointed: “Who is smart enough to say that? Raise your hand.”

After defeating Sinner 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, Zverev explained to reporters what happened.

“He started singing Hitler’s anthem, which was in the old days. It was “Deutschland über alles” and it was too much. However, I think he got involved in the match for a long time.

I don’t mind, I like it when the fans are loud, I like it when the fans are excited. But I think it’s not a great thing to be German and not be very proud of that history.

He sat in the front rows and I think a lot of people heard him. So if I don’t respond, I think it’s bad on my part. It’s his loss, frankly, not to be present for the last two sets of this match” – Oleksandr Zverev.

Zverev will have to fight Carlos Alcaraz (the world leader and the titular champion from New York) to reach the semifinals.
