After launching in Kenya, the project will expand to other African markets where Uber operates, including Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa.

Kenya, a pioneer among African countries in terms of energy transition?

The service, called “Boda” (Motoxi in Swahili) includes: 3000 electric motorcycles which will be available within the next six months. According to Uber, this initiative will reduce the company’s operating costs by 30-35%, while users will pay 15-20% less compared to the previous service.

This is an important step for Uber, which aims to achieve zero emissions worldwide by 2040 thanks to the services offered by its platform.

Kenya is one of the most advanced African countries in terms of energy transition. Really, Nairobi generates over 90% of its electricity from renewable sourcesalthough this remarkable figure is – for now – not accompanied by an adequate charging infrastructure.

An ambitious commitment

To make electric mobility more affordable, many local companies offer battery replacement services for quick battery replacements.

In general, Kenya is investing heavily in electric two-wheelers. President William Ruto has announced plans to increase the number of electric motorcycles in the country from the current 2,000 to over 200,000 by the end of 2024.
