Ukrainian drones again fired at the capital of Russia and two regions in the southwest of the country, on the border with Ukraine, one of which is home to one of the country’s largest nuclear power plants with Chernobyl-type reactors, according to Russian officials. This was announced on Friday by CNN and Reuters.
A Ukrainian drone attacked a city in western Russia that is home to one of the country’s largest nuclear power plants, although there was no damage to the plant, Russian officials said. Governor Roman Starovoit said that a Ukrainian drone early Friday morning damaged the facade of a building in the city of Kurchatov, located just a few kilometers from the Kursk NPP.
“There are no casualties,” Starovoit said. He did not mention possible damage to the Kursk NPP.
The Soviet-era Kursk nuclear power plant has the same type of reactors as the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The explosion and fire at the Chernobyl power plant in 1986 in then-Soviet Ukraine was the world’s worst nuclear disaster, spreading radiation across Europe.
Currently, three RBMK-1000 reactors in Kursk are operating and one is stopped, the State of Russia reports.
Mutual accusations of Russia and Ukraine regarding the danger of Zaporizhzhya NPP
Earlier, Russia and Ukraine accused each other of targeting the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. From the first days of the invasion, Russian troops seized the plant, which with six reactors is the largest nuclear installation in Europe.
According to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, another drone was shot down in the Belgorod region in western Russia.
Moscow Mayor Serhiy Sobyanin announced earlier in the day that air defenses had shot down a drone approaching the capital at night, and that there were no casualties or damage. This briefly disrupted flights to Moscow’s Vnukovo airport.
Meanwhile, in the Kursk region, a Ukrainian drone targeted the city of Kurchatov on Friday morning, governor Roman Starovoit said.
According to him, the drone touched a non-residential building, damaging its facade. Starovoit previously said that the city was targeted by two drones, but later said that the downing of the second drone was not confirmed.
