The devastating explosions in Krevedia resulted in two deaths and 56 injuries and revealed a number of violations. The liquefied gas station, which belonged to the son of the PSD mayor Caracal, was closed only for documentation purposes. Under the noses of the authorities, operations were taking place that could turn into a tragedy at any moment. And the inevitable happened on Saturday night. Most of the injured (43) are employees of the Police Service – 39 firefighters, 2 policemen and two gendarmes. Romania has started transporting patients abroad through the civil protection mechanism.

What do we know about the tragedy in Crevedia?

How many explosions were there in Krevedia and what caused them

Two devastating explosions rocked Crevedia on Saturday, killing two people, one shortly afterwards of a heart attack and the other in hospital on Sunday. We are talking about the wife of the first victim, who has burns on 95% of her body. 56 people were injured, including 39 firefighters, two policemen and two gendarmes.

At the time of the explosions, the liquefied gas warehouse in Krevedia, which had been operating illegally and had been listed as closed since the fall of 2020, had three liquefied gas tanks, two of which were standing outside. During the pumping of gas from one tank to another, in the yard of the enterprise, a fire broke out under one of the tanks. Most likely, it was a cigarette.

The drivers allegedly tried to put out the fire, while four employees went outside to stop traffic. At that moment, the first explosion rang out, as a result of which the first people were injured. Almost an hour later, during which response forces arrived at the scene, there was a second explosion, much more powerful and causing even more casualties.

“As I understand it, there would be a huge risk of simultaneous explosions in all three tanks, which would have a devastating effect. I will make this statement all the time. I went to the hospital and spoke to the victims who were at the scene and they told me what happened. It is difficult to find words to emphasize their heroism,” said Interior Minister Katalin Predoyu.

The company was fined several times by the emergency inspectorate for several violations related to non-compliance with fire safety measures, and on September 30, 2020, the company announced to the authorities the closure of the Crevedia workplace.

Three criminal cases were opened

Three criminal cases have been opened for the explosions in Krevedia.

The Prosecutor General’s Office opened proceedings on the fact of intentional destruction, which caused the disaster, but depending on the investigation, the qualification of the act may be changed.

“The criminal investigation initiated at the level of the prosecutor’s office under the direction of the ÎCCJ prosecutes the crime of intentional destruction causing a disaster, under a disaster within the meaning of the Criminal Code, including a situation where such an event results in the death or bodily injury of two or more persons,” – said the Prosecutor General.

The DNA has opened criminal proceedings – it is investigating possible acts of corruption by officials who perform control duties. As sources in the court informed HotNews.ro, the case was opened on the fact of abuse of official position.

The Military Prosecutor’s Office of Bucharest reported itself and opened a criminal case in the case of firemen’s intervention at the LPG warehouse.

Control at all gas cylinder stations

Prime Minister Marcel Čolaku announced that from Monday, inspections will begin at all gas stations in the country.

“What can I tell you, starting tomorrow, all gas stations throughout the country will enter the control system. In addition, if elements and violations are found that will lead to human lives or pose a threat to people, the activity will be closed on the spot,” said Marcel Colaku on Sunday after visiting the site of the explosions in Crevedia.

The Prime Minister announced that, if necessary, changes will be made to the legislation.

“If necessary, we will make legislative changes over the next week so that these things happen without lawsuits and without certain people trying to keep their businesses going if they are illegal,” Cholaku said.
