In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Caracalla Mayor Ion Doldurea said he was “deeply shocked and appalled by the tragedy that has shaken the local community of Crevedia”.

“Given the situation, although I do not have and never had any involvement in the commercial company where the tragic event took place, but because it is a member of my family, so that there is no other interpretation, I have taken the decision to suspend me from the membership of the PSD and, implicitly, from any other political position,” he declares.

Communiqué issued by Mayor Ion Doldurea:

  • “I am deeply shocked and appalled by the tragedy that has shaken the local community of Crevedia, and I offer all my condolences to the families who have been badly affected, to those who have relatives or friends in hospital beds, and to the citizens who have suffered as a result of the deflagration. I also send health and strength to those who are currently lying in hospital beds and fighting for recovery.
  • I found that one of the statements I made to a reporter yesterday, under the influence of emotion and devastated by the news I had received, had been interpreted and used in a way that was not intended to convey. I have no excuse, but I want to say to everyone that I deeply regret that there was any public perception that I would be indifferent to the efforts and sacrifices of the firefighters and law enforcement agencies involved in this situation.
  • During this discussion with the journalist, based on the detailed information I had, I had in mind, on the one hand, the employees of the company affected by the deflagration, and on the other hand, the firefighters as professionals involved in an operation in which there is a risk.
  • Strictly speaking, it is the firemen’s duty to conduct on-site firefighting maneuvers, so I expressed myself with the phrase “it’s their problem.”
  • As a human being, I am obviously devastated that so many firefighters were injured and other people were injured as a result of this fire, I repeat, an accident.
  • I want to make it very clear that for me, as a person, the Romanian firefighters are heroes, who know that they risk their lives every day and can get seriously injured, being ready at any moment for the highest sacrifices.
  • Given the situation, although I do not have and never had any involvement in the commercial company where the tragic event took place, but because it is a member of my family, so that there is no other interpretation, I have taken the decision to suspend me from PSD membership and, implicitly , from any other political position.”

Digi24.ro reports, citing sources in the PSD leadership, that the leader of the Social Democrats, Prime Minister Marcel Čolaku, was very concerned about the involvement of the mayor’s family in the scandal with the tragedy in Krevedia, and that a measure of self-control to be suspended from the party would not be voluntary, but imposed.

Although he is losing his functions in the PSD, Doldurea is still the head of Caracal’s mayor’s office.

Ion Doldurea is close to Baron Ault Paul Stenescu, the party’s general secretary, and it has been suggested that this relationship also helped his son in the LPG business.

The explosions at the liquefied gas station in Krevedia caused 2 deaths and 56 injuries, most of the victims were among the intervention forces. Several people are in critical condition, and authorities have begun transferring the wounded abroad through the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism. Out of the total number of victims, 43 people are employees of the Police Department (39 firefighters, 2 policemen and 2 gendarmes). The population of the area affected by two powerful explosions on Saturday in Krevedia was evacuated.

The liquefied gas station belonged to Flagas SRL, whose shareholders are Ionuc Daniel Doldurea (51%) and Cosmin Ionuc Stinga (49%), according to Termene.ro. The mayor of Caracalla, Ion Doldurea, is in his first term. He is a businessman from Caracal and president of the PSD municipal organization.
