Russia reprimanded US President Joe Biden on Friday after he said he was not surprised by the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash, with Moscow saying it would be unacceptable for Washington to make such comments, Reuters reported.
Biden said on Wednesday, shortly after reports emerged that Prigozhin was aboard the plane that crashed in Russia’s Tver region, that he was not surprised by the news of Prigozhin’s death and that not much was happening in Russia without Vladimir. He may know about it.
“I am not surprised. There’s not much going on in Russia that Putin isn’t behind, but I don’t know enough to know the answer,” the head of the White House said after being asked by reporters on the subject.
Biden also recalled comments he made in July that Prigozhin should be concerned about his safety after the failed uprising.
At the then press conference in Helsinki after the NATO summit in Vilnius, Biden joked that in Prigozhin’s place “I would watch what they eat, I would watch the menu.”
Russian diplomacy accuses the American president of tactlessness
Sergey Ryabkov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, said on Friday that the comments illustrated Washington’s lack of respect for diplomatic tact.
“However, it is not the business of the US president, in my opinion, to discuss such tragic events,” the Russian diplomat said.
His comments came after President Vladimir Putin on Thursday night offered his condolences to the family of Prigozhin, whom he described as a talented businessman he had known since the 1990s.
“In regard to the plane crash, first of all, I want to express my sincere condolences to the families of all the victims. It’s always a tragedy,” Putin said during a televised statement during a meeting in the Kremlin with Denis Pushylin, the Moscow-appointed head of Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.
“He (Pryhogin) was a talented person, a talented businessman, he worked not only in our country and achieved results, but also abroad, especially in Africa. There he dealt in oil, gas, precious metals and stones. He was a person with a difficult fate and made serious mistakes in life,” the Kremlin leader also said.
