“On August 21, 2023, at 00:39:29 (Romanian time), a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 occurred in OLTENIA, GORGE, at a depth of 14.0 km. The earthquake occurred near the following towns: 10 km north of Tirgu Jiu, 73 km southwest of Hunedoara, 76 km northeast of Drobeta-Turnu-Severin, 84 km west of Ramniku-Valcha, 87 km south of Deva , 98 km southwest of Sibiu!, reports the National Research Institute – Development of Earth Physics (INCDFP).
20 minutes later, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 occurred in the same area at a depth of 14.4 km.
“The earthquake occurred near the following towns: 12 km north of Tirgu Jiu, 72 km southwest of Hunedoara, 77 km northeast of Drobeta-Turnu-Severin, 85 km west of Ramniku-Valcha, 85 km south of Deva, 97 km southwest of Sibiu,” say seismologists.
On February 13, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred in Gorzh, and since then thousands of smaller earthquakes have shaken the county.
In the two months after the earthquake, more than 2,100 earthquakes were registered, 36 of which had a magnitude greater than 3 points.
