A gray configuration with gold rims, a gooseneck spoiler, almost a similar price… Here is undoubtedly the most ambitious Ford Mustang ever, as it looks like it wants to take on the formidable Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

On the sidelines of Monterey Car Week, Ford introduces the Mustang GTD, the road-legal version of the GT3, introduced a few months earlier. If at Volkswagen the abbreviation GTD is associated with the “dynamic” diesel Golf, then on the part of the American company, it’s simply the most extreme production Mustang ever.

The most radical Mustang

To create this special series, dialed for the track, Ford relied on its almost a century of experience in the sport. Indeed, at the design stage, engineers decided to replace several aluminum body panels with new, lighter carbon fiber panels.

As for the suspension, the designers decided to equip the car with a fully adjustable set of shock absorbers, both in terms of compression and rebound and height. The body, meanwhile, received an active aerodynamic kit capable of changing the angles of the rear spoiler and front splitters depending on the curve or straight line.

Under the hood, unsurprisingly, we find the 5.2-liter V8 from the new Mustang, supercharged for the occasion and equipped with a new dry-sump lubrication system. Now driving everything is a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission with a carbon fiber drive shaft for near-perfect weight balance. Everything is associated with magnesium wheels, a titanium exhaust or even Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes.

Nurburgring goal

According to Ford, this special Mustang was designed for a very specific purpose: develop over 800 hp to complete the North Loop in less than 7 minutes.

To achieve this, Ford announced that the entire body of this Mustang GTD was tested in a wind tunnel in Allen Park, Michigan, where several members of the team gathered in 2021 for this mission, which on paper looked like an impossible dream: create a Mustang capable of challenging the best European sports carsincluding the famous 911 GT3 RS.

“The Ford Mustang GTD overturns all conventional wisdom about supercars. This is a new approach for us. We did not design a road car for the track, but a racing car for the road. The Mustang GTD uses the technology of our Mustang GT3, all in a carbon fiber body and homologated for the road.– says Jim Farley, CEO of Ford.

Not all potential customers will be happy, as the brand has announced that production will be limited to a few units, with a base price of around $300,000 (€276,000). The price is very close to the German competitor mentioned a little above.

The first deliveries will take place from the end of 2024 to the beginning of 2025. As for the track-only version of the GT3, we’ll see it next year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
