Russia announced Thursday evening that it had thwarted an attack by Ukrainian naval drones on its fleet in the Black Sea, where clashes have increased since Moscow pulled out of a deal on grain exports from Ukraine, AFP reported.
On Thursday, “at 22:55 (19:55 GMT), the Armed Forces of Ukraine made an unsuccessful attempt to attack the ships of the Black Sea Fleet with an unmanned boat,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a Telegram message.
These ships, according to Moscow, “performed navigation control tasks in the southwestern part of the Black Sea 237 km southwest of Sevastopol,” the headquarters of the Russian fleet.
At the time of the retaliatory strike, “the enemy’s unmanned ship was destroyed by shots (…) of the ships of the Black Sea Fleet – the patrol ship “Pytlyvy” and the patrol ship “Vasyl Bykov”, – the Russian agency added.
According to the same source, the Ukrainian ship did not reach its goal, and “the ships continue to perform their tasks.”
Naval drones have targeted Russian ships several times in recent weeks since Moscow in mid-July refused to extend a UN-brokered deal with Turkey that allowed Ukrainian grain exports. (Agerpress)
