Roberto Mancini, the coach who helped Italy become European champions in 2020, has stepped down as coach, the Italian Football Federation has announced.
Roberto Mancini is no longer the coach of the Italian national team
Mancini, 58, was still under contract with the Squadra Azzurri until July 2026. The technician made this decision 10 months before the start of EURO-2024.
However, Italy were watching their second successive World Cup on TV after they were beaten by North Macedonia in a qualifying play-off for the competition in Qatar.
Mancini was recently appointed as the coordinator of all Italian teams, starting with the under-20 team.
“The Italian Football Federation announces that it has taken note of Roberto Mancini’s resignation as coach of the Italian national team, received late yesterday evening (not Saturday).
Thus ends an important chapter in the history of the Azzurri team, which began in May 2018 and ended with the Nations League final in 2023; between those two moments, winning Euro 2020, a triumph achieved by a group in which everyone knew how to become a team.
In view of the important qualifying matches for Euro 2024 (September 10 and 12, with North Macedonia and Ukraine), the Italian Football Federation will announce the name of the new coach of the national team in the coming days,” the Italian said in a statement to the Forum of States.
In 61 matches with Mancini on the bench, Italy won 39, drew 13 and lost 9 (goal difference 130-49).
