From Sunday, August 13, 2023, the Cantacuzino Castle art gallery will officially open its new exhibition. The art project entitled “Giorgio Butini.Il mito” is the first for the Florentine artist in Romania and explores the boundaries between reality and myth through sculptures as well as sketches and other graphic works. The whole exposition is built around a monumental marble sculpture over two meters high, depicting the myth of the flight of Icarus, created especially for Cantacuzino Castle. The exhibition will be open every day until October 29, 2023.
Giorgio Buttini is an Italian artist born in Florence with extensive experience in fine arts, sculpture, drawing, painting and goldsmithing, as well as ceramics and decorative arts. The artist also specializes in the restoration of paintings, frescoes and stone materials. Butini also engaged in in-depth studies of the anatomy of the human body. He has received seven important awards, such as the second prize at the Venice Biennale in 1997, the prize for the work “Dreams” presented at the sixth edition of the International Biennale of Art in Beijing, China in 2015 and in 2022 the International Prize of the City of Troina in the section sculptures, where he is recognized as the best contemporary sculptor.
“Art is a way of life for me, and I express my deepest feelings in it. So many of my works, reflecting moods and thoughts, found a voice and came to life. The limitations we feel, the loss of values around us, the difficulty of understanding and expressing our deepest needs often mean that we are dissatisfied with our lives, locked in molds that force us to follow predetermined paths that others have chosen for us. – said Giorgio Butini.
Maestro Buttini created numerous public works, including “Majesty”, a bronze and silver sculpture located in the Quirinal Palace Museum in Rome, presented to the President of the Italian Republic in 2010, “Death, Resurrection and the Holy Spirit”, a bronze crucifix presented to the Pope Benedict XVI in 2007 and housed in the Vatican Museums, Rome, as well as The Arch of Peace, a work inaugurated in the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi, Florence, in May 2023. The latter represents the vision of peace by the artist Giorgio Butini and will be permanently exhibited at the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels.
For Cantacuzino Castle, Master Buttini created two sculptures inspired by Greek mythology, thus referring to the theme of the exhibition. The first is a monumental sculpture in Carrara marble depicting the flight of Icarus, located in the castle’s sculpture park, facing the Bucegi Massif. Its height is 2.55 meters and its wingspan is 390 centimeters, making it the only marble statue of Icarus in the world of this scale. The second sculpture, made of bronze and located inside the castle, depicts Artemis, the goddess of wild animals, hunting and vegetation.
During the exhibition, visitors will be able to admire another twenty-five sculptures made of white marble, bronze, slate or acrylic representing deities, as well as some works dedicated to values or abstract concepts such as spiritual rebirth, power, freedom. , supremacy, etc.
The exhibition “Giorgio Buitni.Il mito” is organized by Cantacuzino Castle and Original Media under the auspices of the Italian Embassy in Bucharest and the Italian Cultural Institute in Romania.
The logistics of the exhibition were carried out with the support of Volvo Trucks and KSC Transport, project partners for the safe transportation of the collection from Florence to Busteni.
