A project by Italian football clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan to demolish the San Siro stadium to build a new arena nearby has been blocked by the regional commission for cultural heritage, Italian media reported.
Gazzetta dello Sport writes that the project to demolish the legendary Milan stadium was rejected by the Lombardy Regional Commission for Cultural Heritage.
According to a newspaper from the peninsula, this commission “unanimously expressed a positive opinion on the existence of cultural interest for the second level of the San Siro stadium.”
A decision that prevents the two Milan clubs from moving forward with their joint project, after they have already announced that they want to demolish the San Siro stadium and build a new one because “it is not possible to adapt the existing structures to the current regulatory requirements”.
With the stadium demolition project finally blocked, AC Milan and Inter Milan will continue to co-exist temporarily at San Siro, with the result that they will go their separate ways in the coming years as they each build their own arena.
