What you need to know about the new League 2 season
By the decision of the Executive Committee of the FRF dated July 13, 2023, the current format of the second echelon competition will become the last in the formula with 20 teams.
The first stage of the II League will consist of a regular season in which all 20 teams will participate and in which they will play each other only once, for a total of 19 stages. The second phase of the competition will consist of a play-off and a play-out, in which teams will be allocated based on the final ranking of the regular season, and into which they will enter with all the points accumulated up to that point.
The top six teams will participate in the playoffs and the games will be played back and forth, so each team will end up playing 10 more matches.
According to the results of the playoffs, the first two places will go directly to the Super League, and the winners of the 3rd and 4th places will play a playoff match with the 8th and 7th places of the Super League play-out, according to the following scheme: 3rd place League 2 vs. 8 places of the Super League play-out, 4 place of League 2 vs. 7 places of the Super League play-out.
The remaining 14 teams will participate in the play-out, divided into two groups A and B with seven teams each. Group A will feature teams ranked 7th, 10th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 18th, and 19th, as well as teams ranked 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 16th, 17th, and 20th. places will play in group B.
Participants from each group will play each other only once, resulting in a schedule of seven stages and six matches for each team.
The 6th and 7th place teams are directly relegated from each play-out group. As a result of the transition to the 22-team format, relegation took place only for the 2023-2024 season from the next draw of the championship. the barrier removed, which was to be contested between the 5th place holders in each play-out group, to return to it the following season.
If teams are eliminated during the regular season, the number of eliminations will be reduced accordingly, but the division into two groups will be made in the same way, considering the places of the eliminated teams last.
