The seventh “Mission: Impossible” movie, in which Tom Cruise fights an artificial intelligence out of control, topped the North American box office, according to preliminary estimates made on Sunday by the specialist company Exhibitor Relations, citing AFP.
The Paramount opera grossed $52.6 million in its opening weekend.
Some 27 years after the first film, Mission: Impossible: Deadly Retribution is being shot around the world and is planned to be split into two parts. Stunt lovers will be delighted.
In second place, the thriller “The Sound of Freedom”, recognized by American conservative circles, which tells the story of a retired agent’s fight against child trafficking in Colombia, earned $27 million.
Critics have accused the film of repeating conspiracy theories put forward by the organization QAnon, which denounces an alleged international group of child criminals.
While the studio behind the film, Angel Studios, insists that it follows a thread of truth, lead actor Jim Caviezel and the agent behind the film’s story, Tim Ballard, have offered up some of these theories.
The final episode of the horror saga “Insidious: The Red Door,” in which a father and son battle demons, dropped from first to third place with $13 million.
More so than the blockbuster “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate,” which collected just $12 million in its third weekend and is now in fourth place.
Rounding out the top five is the animated film “Elementary”, a fantastic story from the Pixar (Disney) studio on the background of immigration with 8.7 million euros.
Here are the rest of the top 10:
6 – “Spider-Man: Across the Universe” ($6 million)
7 – “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” ($3.4 million)
8 – “Le Challenge” ($3.3 million)
9 – “Joy Ride” ($2.6 million)
10 – “The Little Mermaid” ($2.4 million)
