CFR Cluj, first leg win with Poli Iași
CFR Cluj achieved success in the first stage of the new season of the Romanian Super League.
The team, trained by Andrea Mandorlini, welcomed the visit of Iasi Polytechnic on their own territory and won without much trouble.
The visitors scored only 4 minutes later after a gross mistake by the Transylvanian defense, but the goal was disallowed due to offside.
CFR responded in the 12th minute and opened the scoring through Birlighea, who performed a simple formality from a few meters after being denied in front of goalkeeper Yankov.
The hosts could have extended their lead before the break, but Zvek and Jefte missed crucial chances to grab the goal.
In the second half, Christy Manea took advantage of a mistake by the visitors’ defense and scored 2:0 with a header (min. 49).
The CFR team could still score until the end, but Ayeti could not get a header.
For CFR, a trip to UTA Arad follows, while the Moldovans will welcome a visit from Hermannstadt.
