The US plans to buy back the decommissioned HAWK air defense missiles it sold to Taiwan and redirect them to Ukraine as part of a military aid package, the China Times reports.
Citing unnamed sources, the publication claims that Washington and Taipei agreed on the ransom last year after consultations with high-ranking security officials.
The transfer is to be made as part of a $2.1 billion defense aid package announced by the US on June 9, according to Sky News.
MIM-23 HAWK is an American medium-range anti-aircraft missile system developed by Raytheon.
It entered service in 1960 and is still used in Egypt, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden and other countries.
The Ukrainian military also used HAWK air defense systems supplied by Spain.
As reported, in January, the US asked the Israeli government to hand over its old Hawk anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine for storage, but Israel refused.
