Volkswagen California: historical model

Originally developed on the basis of the third generation T van, the Volkswagen California was launched in 1988and 22,000 copies were produced. The iconic van was produced by partner motorhome manufacturer Westfalia, which produced 39,000 additional units based on the T4.

In 2004, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles acquired the company in-house production of its built-in vanwith the fifth generation of its vans: it was then that a special site of 7,500 m² was created in the Limmer district of Hanover.

Construction of the Hanover-Limmer plant began in 2003 California production began there in 2004. In the first year, 2,104 cars rolled off the assembly lines, in which 35 employees of Volkswagen Group Services worked. At the time, only about twenty cars were produced per day, then the pace increased over the years, reaching a total of 15,150 California models produced in 2017.
