Armed confrontation in Ukraine will continue until the West abandons its plans to dominate and defeat Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview published on Wednesday with an Indonesian newspaper, Reuters reported.

The goal of the “collective West led by the USA” is to strengthen its global hegemony, Lavrov said in an interview with the Kompas publication. This week, Lavrov will attend the East Asia Summit and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regional forum in Jakarta, where US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is also expected.

“Why does the armed conflict in Ukraine not stop? The answer is very simple – it will continue until the West abandons its plans to maintain its dominance and overcomes its obsessive desire to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia by its puppets in Kyiv,” says the transcript of the interview published on the website of the Russian MFA, quoted by Agerpres.

“So far, there are no signs of a change in this position,” said the head of Russian diplomacy.

Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, in what it calls a “special military operation” to “denazify” the neighboring state. Kyiv and its allies qualify the war, which has already entered its 17th month, as an imperialist aggression aimed at conquering new territories.

Overnight, Russia carried out a wave of kamikaze drone attacks on Kyiv – the second night in a row – just hours before President Volodymyr Zelensky was due to meet NATO leaders at a summit in Vilnius.

The West says it wants to help Ukraine win the conflict with Russia, and Western powers have supplied Kyiv with significant amounts of modern weapons and ammunition.

“A package of ultimatums”

In the interview, Lavrov accused Kyiv of ignoring the peace plan presented by Indonesia and promoting its own “package of ultimatums” instead.

Ukraine rejected Indonesia’s plan, a multi-point formula that included a call for a demilitarized zone, while Kyiv reiterated its position that Russia should withdraw its troops from Ukraine, Reuters reported.

Commenting on internal conflicts in Myanmar after the 2021 military coup, Lavrov called on ASEAN to resolve issues in “close cooperation” with the junta without interfering in Myanmar’s internal affairs.

On Tuesday, ASEAN foreign ministers were to meet to discuss the rise in violence in Myanmar.

The regional bloc excluded the junta from its high-level meetings because it failed to implement a previously agreed peace plan.
