Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told compatriots on Monday evening that the majority of NATO members support his country’s entry, and the Vilnius summit should confirm that Ukraine deserves to be a de facto member of the alliance after the end of the war, sending a “clear signal.”
“Ukraine is on the eve of the Vilnius NATO summit, which could become exactly what our country, the entire Alliance, and global security need. We are working very hard these days! Even more active than ever. And although this work is almost one hundred percent behind the scenes, it is no less important than any public work,” Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in a video message sent to Ukrainians on Monday evening, News.ro reports.
“Everyone understands everything. Every leader, every state. Even if different positions are expressed, it is clear that Ukraine deserves to be in the Alliance. Not now – there is a war, but a clear signal is needed. And we need this signal right now,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.
“The majority of the Alliance is clearly behind us. The courage of Ukrainian heroes wiped away the dust from history and all the values that NATO was created to protect,” the Kyivan assured.
“Ukraine will be in NATO, we are working on the accession algorithm”
Zelenskyi claimed that Ukraine already functions as a security guarantor for NATO’s eastern flank. “The reality of security here, on NATO’s eastern flank, depends on Ukraine. When we applied for NATO membership, we were honest: Ukraine is de facto already in the Alliance. Our weapons are the weapons of the Alliance. Our values are what the Alliance believes in. Vilnius must confirm all this,” Zelensky pleaded.
“We are still working on the formula, that is, on the specific words of this confirmation, but we already understand that Ukraine will be in the Alliance, and we are working on making the admission algorithm as clear and fast as possible. Our work for this – the work of the entire Ukrainian team – will last every minute of these days,” Volodymyr Zelenskyi promised.
“I am sure that there may be good military news for our military in Vilnius,” the Ukrainian president also said, clarifying that the air defense and security of Ukraine will be discussed at the bilateral meetings to be held on the occasion of the summit.
“The day of the summit, which is now unthinkable without Ukraine, will be the 503rd day of total war. This says a lot about our strength – the strength of the Ukrainian people, which in the face of such a war, after so many battles and days, has that strength without which it is simply impossible to imagine the security of Europe,” the President of Ukraine noted. is highlighted.
He ended his nightly address by thanking the soldiers, those who prepare them, volunteers, doctors and everyone who works for the sake of Ukrainian victory. “It is an honor for me to represent such people and such Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.
